Literacy Program

The San Bernardino County Library offers an Adult Literacy Program which helps adults learn to read or improve their reading skill through one on one tutoring. Adult Volunteer tutors are trained through our program and paired with an adult learner to begin the program.

Adult Tutors
You can positively impact the life of a struggling adult learner by volunteering as a reading coach. Being a reading coach is a big responsibility but is also very rewarding. Prospective reading coaches in the Read to Learn Adult Literacy Program must:

  • Have a High School diploma or GED
  • Be willing to commit to meeting with an adult learner in the library for 2 hours a week, for a minimum of 6 months
  • Participate in the tutor training and attend an orientation
  • Sign and agree to comply with the San Bernardino County Library’s volunteer expectations and requirements
  • Have an interest and willingness to teach basic literacy skills to an adult learner
  • Have patience

For Volunteer requirements and to fill out an application.
